Leadership Retreat
On Saturday 6 February, the Elders and Deacons of both congregations
gathered at Brockies Lodge for an all day leadership development
retreat. Stephen Aisthorpe, Development Officer for the Highlands of

bearers to get to know each other better and to receive both
information and inspiration. Our thanks to the following for giving
their time to attend this retreat: Marie Harvey, Ellenor Thomas, David
Garvie, Hamish Mclennan, Ian Morrison, Maris Elkin, Avril Marr, Mary
Bell, Rosemary Mortimer, John Angus MacDonald, and Iain Mortimer.
Open
the Book at
Kirkhill Primary School
Have you ever thought that children in schools might be missing out on
what the Bible has to show them?
In
Kirkhill, on Tuesday 23 February 2010, a team of eight Kirkhill
thespians launched the programme entitled Open the Book
at the Kirkhill Primary School. It is a three year programme
whereby a team of people from the church present ten minute dramas for
the primary school children and beginning with the creation story in
Genesis they go through the entire Bible. The
team have presented their
first production to rave reviews! The children were enthralled. The
school has been most supportive and encouraging of this programme and
our team look forward to introducing the children to the story line of
the whole Bible.
The team go each Tuesday at 2.30 pm for their presentations. Those
making up the team are: Flora Morrison, Nicky Guthrie, Avril Marr,
Alistair and Eileen Morrison, Mary Bell, Pat Jones, Ellenor Thomas,
Emily Wilson, and Margaret Birkbeck.
Offering their support in other
ways are Lisa Quinn, Lesley Courts and Margaret West.
Kirkhill
Parish
Church – Proposed
Renovations
A further update on the proposed
additions/refurbishment to Kirkhill Church is available here.
This contains more detail of what is being proposed and the associated
costs.
New Sign -
Kirkhill Church
Wardlaw Church has a new sign at the entrance gates. Many thanks to
Andrew Fraser of Batten Developments (the Mansefield Park developer)
for arranging the erection of the sign for us.
'Souper Sunday' -
Kiltarlity
"Souper Sunday" in aid of the Church of Scotland's HIV benevolent
project was held in Kiltarlity Church on Sunday 28 February following
the morning worship service. Soup and crusty bread was on the menu and
was much enjoyed by all.
'Souper Sunday' -
Kirkhill
A "Souper Sunday" event will take place at Kirkhill Community Centre in
April following the snow and ice conditions causing the cancellation of
this planned event in January. Details will be confirmed in April.
British
Summer Time
British Summer Time (BST) starts on the last Sunday in March. Remember
to put your clocks forward 1 hour at 1am on
Sunday 28 March 2010, so do not be late for Sunday service that day!
Celestial Choir Rehearsals
The Celestial Choir has begun rehearsal for the services during Holy
Week. The music Mary Robb has chosen is beautiful. We welcome new
members into the choir. We rehearse at Wardlaw Church on Saturdays at
10.30 am. Come join us and make a joyful noise to the Lord.
The Courts Family
Doug, Lesley, Connor, Ryan and Daniel Courts are all recovering from
their recent car accident. Doug is still in Raigmore Hospital and
Lesley is at home as are the boys. The good folk of Kirkhill have been
expressing a desire to help in anyway that is useful. Avril Marr is
co-ordinating our response. If you are interested in providing a meal,
doing some driving, shopping, etc. please be in touch with Avril
(831609) and she will slot you in.
Highland Food Bank
2009 was an incredible year for Food Bank which provided that link in
the chain for 3,625 people, a 36% increase on the 2008 total. The
increase was partly due to the impact of the recession, and the most
common causes leading to folk requiring help from Food Bank were
delayed benefit payments (43%), low income (15%), homelessness (11%)
and debt (6%). Nearly 28 tonnes of food was donated, and this was just
enough to meet the needs of clients. No-one was turned away.
Read more about the work of the Highland Food Bank here.
Burns Supper
A splendid Burns Supper was conducted at Brockies Lodge on Saturday
23rd January. To a full house, Ian Morrison proposed the toast to the
Immortal Memory, Hamish Maclennan proposed the toast to the Lassies,
and Margo Maclennan gave the reply. Others making the evening so
successful were Iain Marr, Marie Harvey, Rosemary and Iain Mortimer,
Catherine and Nicky Guthrie, Charlie Gallacher, Maureen Matheson,
Margaret Shiels, Willis Jones, Craig MacRitchie and Mary Robb. Robbie
Sheriffs and his team at Brockie's Lodge made everyone welcome and
served an excellent supper. Thanks to
the participants and the guests. It was a great evening.
A Big Thank You
from Kirkhill Young Folk
We enjoyed preparing and serving tea, coffee and home bakes for the
congregation after the service on Sunday 10 January 2010. Your very
generous gifts after that event amounted to £90. Sunday
School
funds added a further £45, with a total of £135
being sent
to Blythswood for the work of the Highland Food Bank. Thank you to all.
Friends of
Beechwood House
(Church of
Scotland Home for Drug and Alcohol abuse)
On behalf of the Friends of Beechwood
House, I wish to thank Kiltarlity
Church of Scotland for their most generous donation of £250
raised at their retiral collection from the Christmas Eve Watchnight
Service.
As everybody is aware the home is going through most difficult
times. It looks as if the DP section will be closed in March
but the unit for the long term treatment will continue. Please include
the home in your prayers.

Kirk
Session
At Kiltarlity Church on 10 January 2010, David Garvie and Ellenor
Thomas were ordained as elders by Rev. Reg Campbell, Interim Moderator.
We congratulate David and Ellenor and warmly welcome them to this
ministry of the church.
Kirkhill Kirk
Session
Four of the new Kirkhill elders were
ordained by Rev. Reg Campbell on
Sunday 6 September. They are Mary Bell, Rosemary Mortimer,
Iain Marr and Iain Mortimer. The fifth new elder at Kirkhill is Avril
Marr, who was out of the country on 6 September, and who was ordained
by Rev. Stewart Frizzell on Sunday 20 September at Kirkhill. All of the
new elders were made to feel very welcome, and look forward to getting
involved, albeit wearing learner plates.
Iona
Pilgrimage
We have had one couple withdraw from our pilgrimage to Iona on April
30th to May 2nd. That means we have two spaces available. If you are
interested in going on this wonderful pilgrimage speak to Willis soon.
Greening
of
Kiltarlity Church
What an evening it was for the
"Greening of the Church" in Kiltarlity
on Friday 11th December. It was a gourmet's delight in the standing
room only turnout. Everybody took part in the decorating of
the church and it was gorgeous. The caricatures of Willis and Pat on
the wall would take one's breath away (permanently!). The caricatures
were drawn by Sarah Ferguson following a prompt from her mother-in-law.
Marie Harvey organised the decorating section and Ethna Ferguson
organised the food department. The fun of the evening was that
everyone took part. The elders made the wine, and Willis and Pat have
never seen American flags decorating a Christmas tree before. Thanks to
all for a lovely event.

Church Flowers -
Kiltarlity
You may enjoy arranging flowers or wish to place flowers in the church
for a special anniversary or occasion. Or you may prefer to donate
flowers and have someone else to do the arranging.
The flower list for 2010 is now on our church notice board for you to
enter your name and telephone number against the dates of your choice.
Flowers last well in the church and it is feasible to book a two week
slot.
New donors / arrangers are welcome. Any further information, please
contact : Barbara Wilton (741352) or Marie Harvey (741328). A
church key is available from Barbara Wilton if required.
Grateful thanks to all our flower donors / arrangers who made our
church welcoming with their beautiful flowers in 2009.
Church Flowers -
Kirkhill
If you wish to put flowers in the Church on a particular Sunday that is
special to you, please enter your name and telephone number against the
date(s) of your choice on the flower list calendar for 2010 in the
church vestibule. Anne Lyle can be contacted on 831453, if you
wish her to choose and arrange your flowers. Alternatively you may give
Anne money to buy flowers for “free” Sundays.
Should you wish to deal with the flowers yourself, do remember that
arrangements are lovely but a simple bunch in one of the church vases
will be more than acceptable.
Thank you to everyone who contributed with flowers or funds during the
last year!

Kirkhill Parish
History
There are two new books on the Kirkhill parish history and the areas
that surround it available for purchase. The books are compiled by Mr
H. W. Harrison. Volume one covers the Parish, estates, infrastructure
and occupations, whilst volume two covers the townships. The books cost
£25 for each volume. Neither Kilmorack Heritage, who have
agreed to act as the agent responsible for selling and ordering the
books, or Mr Harrison, wish to make a profit from the books, so the
Kirkhill Church Development Fund will benefit between £5 and
£6 from the sale of each book. Please order from Jim Ogilvie,
the Secretary of the Community Council, at 22 Newton Park, Kirkhill or
telephone 831316. Please make your cheques payable to either Kirkhill
and Bunchrew Community Council, or Kilmorack Heritage.

This web site for our churches was designed and set up by our Interim
Moderator, Rev. Reg Campbell. It is now being maintained by a team of
people across both
churches and they would value any comments that you may have about it.
A web site is always in the state of being further developed and it
needs your input to make it truly worthwhile. If you have any
